3,600 photos, countless stories: ActewAGL announces 'Capture the Energy' winners

A beach moment, a Canberra festival and a Namadgi adventure take out the ‘Capture the Energy’ photo competition.

From the ranges of Namadgi, to the heart of Canberra and the beaches of the south coast, locals have turned their cameras on the places they love.

ActewAGL is delighted to announce the winners of its ‘Capture the Energy’ photo competition, which invited people from across the ACT and south-east NSW to share photographs reflecting what ‘the energy for around here’ means to them.

The competition, conducted in partnership with Australian Community Media, captured the imagination of the community, attracting more than 3,600 entries that showcased the many ways people experience, create and connect with energy across the region. From iconic landscapes and local events to everyday moments of joy, adventure and connection, the entries highlighted the unique spirit of the places we call home.

“We’re lucky with where we live. In a couple of hours, you can go from the mountains to the city to the sea, and these three winning photos really showcase where we work and play,” said ActewAGL’s Group Manager - Brand, Marketing and Product, Todd Eagles. Mr Eagles thanked everyone who took part. “The creative talent out there is incredible. To everyone who sent in a photo, thank you, it was a real privilege to see our region’s energy through your lens.”

The overall winning image, Echoes of Australian Summer, by Lisa from Googong stood out for its striking composition, vibrant colour and ability to capture a moment that resonates with so many Australians.

The first runner-up image, Hands Up in the Noise by Cathy from Macgregor, captures the excitement, connection and shared energy of a community event, while the second runner-up image, Legoland – Namadgi by Darrel from Oxley, celebrates the sense of wonder and adventure that comes from exploring the natural world.

Judges Karleen Minney, photographer and photographic editor at The Canberra Times, and Matt Batten, Executive Creative Director at AFFINITY, had the tough job of choosing the winners.

“Honestly, it was incredibly difficult. We could have picked dozens of winners,” Karleen said. “Alongside the big events and landmarks, there were so many beautiful everyday moments that show what makes our communities tick.”

“There were many wonderful images that captured some of the region’s most iconic events, landmarks and locations, alongside beautiful photographs of the everyday moments that bring our communities to life. From outstanding composition and colour to capturing a fleeting moment at just the right time, the winning photographs beautifully reflect the energy that surrounds us every day,” said Matt.

“While we provide the electricity and gas that help power everyday life, it’s the people in our communities whose images perfectly capture the moments, experiences and connections that make up the real energy for around here,” said Mr Eagles.

The winner receives an ActewAGL bill credit and a $5,000 photography kit and their photo will feature with other standout entries in an upcoming ActewAGL campaign.

All photos entered can be viewed at capturetheenergy.com.au and some, along with their stories, will be shared on ActewAGL’s social channels over the coming weeks, so keep an eye on Facebook and Instagram. You might just spot a familiar view.
