The health, safety and wellbeing of our customers, contractors and community is our highest priority. The Fridge Buyback program is still running, but to minimise the risk of exposure to COVID-19, we ask that you leave appliances outside your home or garage for pick up. We won’t collect your fridge or freezer if it’s inside your premises.

Am I eligible?
You’re eligible for Fridge Buyback if:
- You live in the ACT.
- You’re an existing ActewAGL customer.
- Your fridge or freezer is in working order.
- We’ll pick up both one and two door fridges or freezers. Only two door appliances are eligible for the credit

*Eligible fridges are degassed in an environmentally-responsible way, using a recovery cylinder. Gasses are transported to Melbourne for safe destruction by Refrigerant Reclaim Australia. Usable steel and copper is recycled as scrap metal.

What is the ActewAGL Fridge Buyback program?
It’s a free service where ActewAGL can arrange for the collection, degassing and recycling of a working fridge or freezer. If you're eligible, a $30 rebate will be applied to the electricity account for the account holder of the address the fridge/freezer was removed from.
Who is eligible to participate?
Any residential or business* property in the ACT where the fridge/freezer is still in a working order.
Who is eligible for the $30 rebate?
If you are an ActewAGL customer, your fridge has two doors and is in working order, you will be eligible for the rebate. The rebate will be applied to the electricity account holder’s invoice for the address the item was removed from.
When can I expect to see the $30 rebate on my electricity bill?
Depending on your next scheduled meter reading date, the rebate will be seen within the next two billing periods after your fridge/freezer was collected.
My fridge is a single door/chest freezer. Will I still be eligible for the rebate and free removal?
You will be eligible for the free removal but won’t be entitled to the $30 rebate. Fridge/freezer removal will be free of charge if the removal involves less than 20 steps/stairs and can be completed in 15 minutes or less. Only working fridges or freezers will be eligible for free removal.
My property is difficult to access. Am I still eligible?
Fridge/freezer removal will be free of charge if the removal involves less than 20 steps/stairs and can be completed in 15 minutes or less. If the removal will involve more than 21 steps or take longer than 15 minutes, a cost for removal will be quoted on site with the customer.
The removalists have the right to refuse to remove a fridge/freezer if they believe it is unsafe to do so.
I have more than one fridge that I’d like to get rid of. Will you take multiple fridges?
Yes we can collect up to three fridges as long as fridges are eligible under the program and you have advised when ordering the pickup you have more than one eligible appliance. Business customers will be dealt with on a case by case basis.*
If I have more than one fridge removed, do I get multiple rebates?
Yes, you will get multiple rebates for up to three, fridges that are eligible under the program.
Can an under 18 year old be the only person at the house?
No, there will need to be a person over the age of 18.
Are Queanbeyan customers eligible? Are any NSW customers eligible?
Only properties in the ACT are eligible for the program.
* An eligible business premises is one that does not have energy reporting obligations under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 (Cth), the Australian Government’s Energy Efficiency in Government Operations Policy or the Carbon Neutral ACT Government Framework.
Please call us on 1300 136 008 if you are unable to be present for the fridge/freezer collection and need to make alternative arrangements.
If you have informed us you are not going to be home:
- Leave the completed Fridge Buyback^ form inside the appliance.
- The appliance must be left on your property in an area without pets. ActewAGL’s contractors cannot collect appliances left in public areas.
- You must make the appliance doors safe, so that no child can get inside. Either remove the doors or use industrial-grade tape or rope to secure the appliance doors shut.
- To minimise the risk of theft, the appliance should only be put outside on the night before or the morning of the collection and left in as inconspicuous a location as possible. ActewAGL does not assume any responsibility for theft of appliances left outside for collection.
What do I need to do before the fridge/freezer is collected?
Before the day of collection you will need to:
- Remove any food and drink then unplug and defrost the appliance but draws and shelving can remain in the appliance.
- Empty any drip trays in the appliance as this is very important in order to protect your flooring.
- Remove any obstacles from the vicinity of the appliance and in and around the house where the removalists will need access to.
Who will be collecting my fridge?
Your fridge will be collected by KK Technical Service. KK Technical is an experienced removalist company. The removalists are ActewAGL contractors and can be identified by their ActewAGL identity cards.
How soon will my fridge get picked up?
When you call 1300 136 008 to book a fridge pick up, a time and date for removal will be confirmed.
What if they can’t get the fridge out?
If the removalists are unable to remove a fridge/freezer the collection will not be able to be completed.
What do I do if I can’t make the scheduled collection date?
Please let us know well in advance and we can make an alternative collection date. If our removalists turn up and are unable to make the collection due to your absence or in instances of day of collection cancellations, we will not be able to pay the $30 rebate on a subsequent rebooking.
What extra information do I need to give when booking a pickup?
When making a booking please have your electricity account number, any concession details as well as the brand and model of the fridge/freezer if possible.

Are fridges/freezers recycled?
Yes, the fridges and freezers are sent for metal recycling, where the copper and steel are recovered.
What happens to the harmful gasses?
The gases are shipped to Melbourne for safe destruction by Refrigerant Claim Australia. The gases (CFC’s and HCFCs) are extracted from the fridges or freezer in cylinders where the gas is then destroyed in an environmentally-responsible manner in a plasma furnace.
When will I receive the rebate?
The rebate will appear on the ActewAGL electricity account holder’s next invoice for the address the item was removed from following the degassing and recycling of the fridge/freezer.
Can I choose to have the rebate gifted as a cash cheque?
No, the rebate will be applied to the ActewAGL electricity account for the address the item was removed from.
My property was damaged during the removal process. Can I make a claim?
