Why do energy prices change?

Your pricing questions answered.

Comparing ActewAGL electricity and gas pricing plans

Every year, all energy retailers review their electricity and gas prices and inform customers of changes. These reviews and changes come into effect every July.

ActewAGL and our predecessors* have been committed to the Canberra region for over 100 years and recognise our responsibility to the people who live here. Like always, we’re dedicated to providing transparent information and expert energy advice, by a team of locals who live here too.

Here’s what you need to know about energy prices, and how we can support you to better manage your bill.

  • The Independent Competition and Regulatory Commission (ICRC) regulates ActewAGL’s standing offer prices based on the changing costs which make up an electricity bill. The ICRC has announced its pricing determination to apply from 1 July 2021.

ActewAGL’s ACT electricity prices will be increasing by 11.95% for residential and small business customers.

What does this mean for customers?

A small ACT household using 4,000 kWh per year will see an increase of approximately $130 per year.

A typical ACT household using 6,500 kWh per year will see an increase of approximately $215 per year.

A larger ACT household using 8,000 kWh per year will see an increase of approximately $264 per year.

For an average business customer using 25,000kWh a year, the increase in the annual bill will be around $830.

Full details of the ICRC decision can be found here

  • ActewAGL will decrease gas prices in the ACT by around 1% from 1 July 2021.

What does this mean for customers?
A typical ACT residential household using 30 GJ per year will see a decrease of approximately $20 per year.

  • Electricity prices will change for NSW residential and small business customers in line with the Default Market Offer (DMO), as determined by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER).

The price will change on 1 July 2021.

    Essential Energy region
Customers in the Essential Energy region will see prices decrease by around 3%. These changes will reduce a typical bill by between approximately $50 and $85 per year.

    Endeavour Energy region
Customers in the Endeavour Energy region will see prices decrease by around 6%. These changes will reduce a typical bill by between $100 and $150 per year.

Full details of the AER determination can be found here

  • From 1 July 2021 there will be some minor changes to ActewAGL’s gas prices in NSW, depending on where you live and the plan you are on. The price changes range from a 2% reduction to a 2% increase, depending on region and plan. Please check your account details for more information on the changes to relevant to you.
