ACT Feed-in Tariff scheme
The ACT Electricity Feed-in Tariff scheme rewards households and businesses that install renewable energy generation technology by paying a premium price for the electricity they generate. For each unit of metered kilowatt hour (kWh) renewable energy generated (solar or wind), you will be paid at a rate greater than the retail price you would usually pay to buy the same amount of energy for your use.
Please note
- On 31 May 2011, the ACT Government closed the micro-generator (less than 30kW capacity) category of the feed-in tariff scheme.
- On 12 July 2011, the scheme was re-opened to micro-generators by allowing them to access scheme cap originally set aside for medium-generators (30kW – 30MW capacity).
- At midnight 13 July 2011, following overwhelming demand the scheme was closed to both micro and medium-generators.
- This means that customers installing solar are no longer eligible for the ACT feed-in tariff with the exception of those who signed a contract with their installer and paid a deposit no later than 31 May 2011.
- Existing recipients of the feed-in tariff are unaffected.
- Further information from the ACT Government can be found here.
ActewAGL is pleased to offer its own Solar Buyback scheme which credits customers for generation.
The ACT Feed-in Tariff scheme is based on gross generation, so you are paid for each unit of electricity that you generate. Most other jurisdictions only pay you for any energy left after deducting your own consumption.
- From commencement of the scheme until 30 June 2010 this amount will be 50.05¢ per kWh generated for systems up to 10kW.
- For systems between 10kW and 30kW a rate of 40.04¢ per kWh will be paid.
- For customers who are eligible (see note above) and sign up after 1 July 2010, this amount will be 45.7¢ per kWh generated for systems with a capacity up to 30kW.
For energy consumption, standard supply arrangements will apply. New and existing customers will pay for the electricity they consume at the rates published in ACT standard retail electricity supply schedule of charges from 1 July 2011 (PDF, 411KB).
You must apply for this scheme
Whether you are a new or existing ActewAGL customer with a renewable energy generator connected to the network, you must apply to receive the Feed-in Tariff — you will not automatically be switched to it. By default, you will be placed on the ActewAGL Solar Buyback scheme.
More information on the ACT Electricity Feed-in Tariff scheme is available from the ACT Government's Department of the Environment, Climate Change, Energy and Water website.
Of course, you should discuss any potential financial implications with your tax advisor before proceeding with installation of your renewable energy generator to determine whether payments received by you under the scheme are subject to income tax or GST, or if there are other implications for your circumstances.
