Rural and bushfire abatement zone vegetation management

ActewAGL Distribution is proposing to the ACT Government that changes be made to the regulations that govern the vegetation clearances associated with electricity infrastructure in the rural and bushfire abatement zones within the ACT.

The proposed changes to the Utilities Networks (Public Safety) Regulation 2001 are explained in ActewAGL Distribution’s consultation paper titled Vegetation Management Proposal: Rural and bushfire abatement zones in the ACT. The consultation paper makes reference to additional advice obtained by ActewAGL. This report by Ecological Australia is titled Preliminary Review of vegetation clearance for protection of above ground network facilities from bushfire. If you would like a hard copy, or an accessible version of either of these documents, please email consumerfeedback@actewagl.com.au.

During December and February 2016, ActewAGL Distribution hosted two community workshops to provide a presentation and discuss the proposed changes. During these workshops areas of discussion included how the changes related to standards in other jurisdictions; what the proposed changes mean in terms of numbers of trees in Canberra’s nature parks; how changes will be implemented and the importance of clarity to assist with simply explaining the changes once they are finalised.

Feedback from the community has now been incorporated into ActewAGL Disrtibution’s proposal to the ACT Government.
