Preventing damage to our utility networks
ActewAGL's utility infrastructure can be found below ground, above ground and at ground level. Know your responsibilities in protecting our natural gas, electricity, water and wastewater networks and avoid a potentially dangerous and/or expensive mistake.
The law prohibits landowners and occupiers from interfering with utility infrastructure, for example by blocking access or building too close or on top of infrastructure. Utility infrastructure includes things such as pipes, poles, cables, wires, gas mains and connection points.
We all have three major responsibilities in protecting our networks:
- Check your block before you plan any building, renovation, landscaping or other development to ensure that you do not damage or obstruct utility infrastructure. Make one free call to Dial Before You Dig on 1100 to find out where all your services are located. To check the required distances from powerlines, sewers, pipes, and gas and water mains call ActewAGL on 6248 3555.
- Keep all network infrastructure clear of obstruction — the minimum clearance required is generally 1.5 metres, but make sure you check the specific requirements for your situation as there are significant exceptions. Start by reading the information in this section for underground, ground level and overhead infrastructure. Typical obstructions include trees and other vegetation, swimming pools, retaining walls, pergolas and cubby houses — although this is just a small sample.
- Report any damage or faults to network infrastructure. If you see anyone vandalising utility infrastructure, or if you notice damage that has occurred, you should contact us immediately.

Trees and other vegetation have the potential to cause great damage if they grow too close to our infrastructure. Manage your vegetation properly or risk a fine.
