Statement by ActewAGL Branch Manager Works Delivery Clinton McAlister

Friday 02 June 2017

There is significant work underway to build and service new suburbs in north Canberra, and supplying electricity is part of this development.

In addition to our work on adapting the network to support this exciting growth, there is significant excavation and building works underway that are also impacting the electricity grid.

There have been six unrelated outages across suburbs around Gungahlin in the past four weeks and we apologise to customers for the frustration and inconvenience this has caused.

Two outages in past 24 hours were the result of cable failure. This impacted customers early this morning with power restored just after 9.30am. Previous outages occurred on May 8, 15, 17 and 24 – caused by a range of issues, including cable faults, a tripped safety setting, and third-party damage.

We are making immediate changes to reduce the chance of further outages, including pausing upgrade work until after the winter peak period. While we cannot guarantee that there won’t be future blackouts, these steps will make the network more robust.

In response to enquiries around potential compensation, all claims demonstrating financial loss are considered on a case-by-case basis. Further information is on the ActewAGL website.
