What is the Consumer Data Right?
The Consumer Data Right (CDR) for Energy gives you the ability to share your ActewAGL data with authorised third parties, known as Accredited Data Recipients or ADRs. ActewAGL is a data holder under the CDR for Energy. It is important to know that ActewAGL will only ever share your data after you’ve asked us to.
What benefits are there for me?
Allowing you to share your data more easily, can help you make more informed decisions about energy products and services.
For example, you could be comparing energy plans on a comparison website. If the comparison site is an ADR, they might ask if you want to share your current usage data so they can recommend an offer to best match your needs.
Can I share my data?
You can share your data if you are an ‘eligible customer’. To be eligible, you must:
- be a current ActewAGL electricity or gas customer
- be at least 18 years old
- have your own email address registered and authenticated by us (not a shared or joint email address)
- have your own mobile phone number registered and authenticated by us (not a shared or joint number)
- have your consumption under an electricity contract be less than 5 GWh in the previous 12 months (or if the contract has existed for less than 12 months, the estimated annual consumption is less than 5 GWh). A contract might include more than one connection point/supply address.
You can’t share your data if any of the following apply to you:
- joint account
- small business account with multiple authorised contacts
- large business
- customers with other complex scenarios.
Is sharing my data safe?
Strict rules apply to both the collection and subsequent use of CDR data under the Competition and Consumer Act and the CDR Rules.
To request access to your CDR data, an ADR must be accredited by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). The ACCC has set stringent accreditation criteria, privacy and information security standards that must be met before the third party accesses any CDR data. Additionally, the privacy of CDR data is regulated by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).
You can choose to share your CDR data with any CDR-accredited third-party organisations.

How do I share my CDR data?
If you are an eligible customer and meet the requirements to share your CDR data, you can authorise us to share your CDR data with an ADR.

The first thing you need to do is select and sign up with an ADR. This is done through their website or app.

Your ADR will ask you to select the data you want to share and the length of time you want to share your data with them. It can be a once-off or an ongoing arrangement.

Once you've made these selections, you'll need to consent to the ADR (via their website or app) collecting your ActewAGL-held CDR data. To do this, they'll direct you to ActewAGL to verify your identity.

We'll ask you to verify your identity using the email address registered with your ActewAGL account.

Next, we'll send a One Time Password to the mobile number associated with your ActewAGL account to complete your verification.

Once you’ve been verified, you can select the eligible ActewAGL accounts from which you'd like to share your CDR data. Some of your accounts may not be available for data sharing. If that’s the case, they won’t be visible for you to select.

We will then advise you what CDR data we will be sharing and for how long.

Finally, we will ask you to consent and authorise us to share the specified CDR data with the ADR.
The ADR will instantly access your data to show you options based on your needs. You can revoke this access and stop sharing any time you like.
What data can I share?
- Your details
- Name, address and contact information
- We won’t share your date of birth.
- Account and plan details
- Account number, energy type, current plan
- Concession and payment assistance information
- Billing data
- How you pay your bill, billing frequency and scheduled payments
- Tariff information
- Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) data:
- e.g. your usage and your National Meter Identifier (NMI)

How do I stop sharing my CDR data?
You can stop sharing your CDR data with the ADR at any time. You can do this by withdrawing the consent you gave to the ADR or withdrawing an authorisation you provided to us to share your CDR data.
You will need to contact the ADR to make any changes to the period of time that you want to share your CDR data for.
Correcting your data
If any of your CDR data is incorrect, please let us know so we can do our best to fix it.
