Process flow

Inflow regulation and storage dam

Excess flows into the plant during rain is generally caused by illegal connections from storm water pipes, cracked pipes and manhole covers. This can cause hydraulic overloading at the LMWQCC treatment plant.

Inflow regulation is a facility for holding back up to 25 million litres of wastewater in the sewer system. This allows more even control of the influent flow to the plant, which enables more efficient processing during high plant flows.

The storage dam is also part of the inflow regulation system. During very high flows, primary treated wastewater can be diverted to the dam for treatment at a later time when flows through the plant are more manageable. Wastewater can also be diverted to the storage dam at other stages of processing.

The dam has the ability to store up to 147 million litres, which is an equivalent to 1.5 days of normal flow.

There are eight steps in the process flow. Start with step 1.
