ACT natural gas tariffs FAQs
ACT natural gas price increase from 1 January 2009
Why are prices increasing?
Due to a number of factors outside of our control, ActewAGL is forced to increase its gas retail prices from 1 January 2009 in order to recover these costs. The reasons for the increase are outlined below.
- Increased cost in shipping gas to the ACT.
- Increased cost to ActewAGL in accessing pipeline capacity for the winter period.
- Increases in fixed operating costs.

Will I be affected by the price increase?
The price increase applies to customers who are supplied under a Standard Form Customer Supply Contract at the published prices.
Customers supplied under a bundle contract are subject to the terms and conditions of that contract, which state that they are also subject to price variations. These customers have been notified of their increase via a letter.

How much extra will I have to pay?
The increase is $1.03 per week for a typical residential natural gas customer who uses 50GJ pa on the Home Gas and Home Saver gas plan.

Why is GST charged on my natural gas and not my water and sewerage services?
Water and sewerage services are granted GST-free treatment under specific provisions of the GST legislation.
Natural gas services are not exempt under any specific provision. Consequently GST applies to natural gas services.
ActewAGL has published the new natural gas tariffs showing prices excluding and including GST to enable customers to identify the effect of the GST.

Will my pension/health care rebate increase accordingly?
ActewAGL administers the rebate scheme on behalf of the ACT Government and provides advice to the ACT Government when charges are varied.
The ACT Government will determine if the price increase will impact on the rebate scheme and notify ActewAGL accordingly.

Who determines these new charges?
As retail natural gas pricing is fully contestable in the ACT, ActewAGL determines the charges it sees fit to cover the costs of retailing natural gas to customers. The ICRC has been notified of the price increase beforehand.
