Solar systems in the ACT

Domestic solar water heaters

The most common system, domestic solar water heaters consist of up to three relatively thick glazed solar panels, each about one metre by two metres in size. Sometimes a roof-mounted water tank is attached and matt black metal may be visible behind the panel glass.

These types of systems are used to provide hot water for kitchens, bathrooms and other household use. When there is not enough sunlight to reach useful temperatures these systems are commonly boosted by electrical or, less commonly, gas heating.

To install one of these systems in the ACT planning permission may be required through the ACT Planning and Land Authority.

Solar pool water heater

A larger area of black plastic pipes with no glazing is a solar pool water heater. These are used for pool heating and heat water to a lower temperature than domestic solar water heaters. Often not boosted by electricity or gas, solar pool water heaters are used to extend the comfortable swimming season.

Photovoltaic cells

These systems generate renewable electricity that can be used throughout the home to offset energy bills. Some customers may be eligible to be paid for energy they generate and export to the ACT electricity grid under the ActewAGL Solar Buyback Scheme.

Photovoltaic cells are substantially smaller and thinner than other panels and sometimes have shiny blue metal visible under their glazing. These produce electricity from the sunlight striking them. Individual panel sizes vary, but larger installations are likely to involve a number of 50 centimetre by one metre panels, each producing up to 80 watts of electricity under full sunlight.

The Federal government operates a Photovoltaic Rebate Program that provides cash rebates for householders who install grid-connected or stand-alone photovoltaic systems (conditions apply). For details of this program visit the Australian Greenhouse Office.
