General information about solar systems and connections in the ACT
About solar energy
Solar energy is the radiant energy of the sun, which can be converted into other forms of energy, such as heat or electricity.
There are two main types of solar electricity generation: photovoltaic cells and solar thermal plants.
Photovoltaic (solar systems)
Solar systems generate electricity directly from sunlight. These systems are ideal for homeowners as they have no moving parts, noise or pollution and minimal maintenance or cleaning is required. If your system is connected to the grid, this then allows you to have the freedom to use your energy as you please.
Australia is a country that mostly enjoys abundant sunlight year round. By using solar or photovoltaic (solar system) cells we can capture this sunlight and turn it into solar energy to power equipment like domestic hot water systems or solar pool water heaters – without emitting any harmful substances into the environment.
Solar cells are therefore a practical way of reducing our dependence on traditional electricity sources such as coal, oil and gas.
