What is the Big Business Light Switch program?
It is an ACT energy efficiency program aimed at helping businesses save on their energy costs. It involves the removal of existing traditional lights and provides the products and installation of new energy efficient LED lights. Depending on the building type, the program may be free or available at a heavily subsidised cost. All lights are fitted by a licensed electrician at a time that is convenient to you.

How much does it cost? Is it free?
The program is free for selected building types, or subsidised for all others. Any potential costs will be identified in your free quote and works will only proceed with your approval. The cost of the installation depends on several factors including the building type and how the existing lights are installed. Some buildings will require a simple installation which may enable it to be free. For buildings that are more complex, for example have high ceilings or difficult-to-reach lights, there will be a small cost incurred. The actual cost will vary from business-to-business and we encourage all eligible ACT businesses to get a free quote from ActewAGL.
How do I register?
You can register online. Please note that registering online doesn’t secure a booking; our team will call you back to organise your on-site quote.
Steps to Getting Your Big Business Light Switch:
1. Register online
2. We’ll arrange a time to visit your business for a free assessment
3. We’ll conduct an on-site assessment and generate a quote
4. After you approve the quote works will be scheduled commence
5. The ActewAGL Energy Efficiency Team will arrive on the date and time of the booking to undertake the installation
What are the eligibility criteria?
ActewAGL’s Big Business Light Switch is available to all business premises in the ACT who:
1. Have eligible lights
2. Do not currently have a reporting obligation under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 (NGER)
3. Electrical wiring must meet Australian standards
What can I expect during my appointment?
Free on-site assessment
Your free pre-assessment will take around 30 minutes and we’ll require access to your business premises. During this time we’ll assess the scale of the proposed installation including lighting types. Following this, you’ll receive a quote for your approval in order to set an installation date. Your quote will include any costs (where applicable) and the scope of work to be completed.
Installations are conducted by our licensed electricians at a time agreed by you. The duration of your appointment will vary depending on the scale of the installation.
How can the program be free / subsidised?
As part of meeting our greenhouse gas emission reduction target legislated as part of the Energy Efficiency Improvement Scheme (EEIS), ActewAGL is required to offer incentives for ACT premises to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
What is the Energy Efficiency Improvement Scheme (EEIS)?
The ACT’s Energy Efficiency Improvement Scheme (EEIS) is an ACT Government initiative that commenced on 1 January 2013 and will run until 31 December 2020.

Why do I need to sign a form?
By signing the form, you are confirming that you have participated in the program and that the details on the form are true and correct to the best of your knowledge.
This information may be collected by the ACT Government-appointed Administrator of the EEIS to verify that the activity was undertaken in accordance with Scheme, health, safety, environment and other requirements.
What is a LED?
LED stands for light emitting diode and works by electricity passing through a semiconductor, which produces light.
Are Queanbeyan customers eligible? Are any NSW customers eligible?
No. Residents and businesses of NSW are not eligible to participate in this program, unless they are an ACT property owner purchasing products or arranging activities for installation in a residential property in the ACT.
NSW residents may be eligible to participate in the NSW Energy Savings Scheme (ESS). For more information on the ESS, go to www.ess.nsw.gov.au

How much can I save?
Businesses can save hundreds, even thousands, on their annual energy costs. The savings you make will depend on the types of lights installed and hours of operation. As an example:
200 x 36 watt T8 fluorescent tubes
200 x 16 watt LED T8 tubes
Save $2,419 per year and reduce your lighting costs by 56%i
20 x 400 watt high bay
20 x 150 watt LED high bays
Save $3,024 per year and reduce your lighting costs by 63%ii
Is this program compulsory?
No, it’s not compulsory to participate. Works are only conducted once approval is received by the selected business.
Do I need to take all of the products offered?
No, you have no obligation to accept any of the products offered to you.
I already have energy efficient lighting and other energy efficient products installed in my business. Can I get a refund on those items?
No, for products to be included in the program they must have been installed by an authorised installer from ActewAGL’s Energy Efficiency team and be recorded on an EEIS activity record form.
If I’m not happy with what or how something has been installed, Will someone come back and change it?
If you are not happy with the product or how it was installed, call 1300 789 002 and the ActewAGL Energy Efficiency team will be happy to assist you. The ActewAGL Energy Efficiency team may replace a product if it is not working correctly or has been installed incorrectly. Products and installation are protected by a 2-year warranty.
Who will conduct the installation?
The ActewAGL Energy Efficiency team will attend your property to on site assessment and arrange for a quote to be issued. An installation will only be undertaken once we obtain your approval.
What colour light are the LEDs? Are they warm white or cool white?
The colour appearance of light is measured as units of Kelvin (K). The higher the Kelvin the ‘cooler’ or more blue the light is – 2500 K has a very warm or yellow appearance whereas 4000 K is a cool blue light. The LED fluorescent tubes we will install are between 4000K - 6000K which is considered a cool white. The LED high bay lights are 5000K.
Can you install new bulbs in a fitting that doesn’t have a working bulb?
No, we are unable to replace a broken/blown bulb for LED bulb replacement. All lights must be functioning in order to be replaced.
Is there a warranty that comes with the LED bulbs?
The LED lights and installation we provide come with a 2-year warranty. Please contact ActewAGL if you need to make a warranty claim.
Is there a limit to how many LED lights I can have installed?
No, as long as there are no wiring and compatibility issues.
I already have LEDs. Will you refund the costs I have incurred for upgrading to LEDs?
Is the program safe?
The Big Business Light Switch program is undertaken in the presence of a qualified electrician. ActewAGL uses only LED’s that have met the requirements of the Electrical Equipment Safety System’s (EESS) national database and where the supplier is listed as a ‘responsible supplier’ under the Electrical Regulatory Authorities Council (ERAC). As part of the program, your existing eligible T8 fluorescent tubes will simply be replaced and the existing ballast will be removed as this is not required with LED tubes. High bay light fittings and globe will be removed and a complete LED high bay luminaire will be replaced. For a complete check-up of the wiring at your property please contact your electrician.
