Federal incentives for renewable energy generators

Households, businesses and community groups that install eligible small-scale solar photovoltaic, wind and hydro-electricity systems from 9 June 2009 and haven't already received a rebate may be eligible for Solar Credits.

This government-funded program works on the exchange of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) instead of a direct cash rebate. The Renewable Energy Target (RET) scheme guarantees a market for additional renewable energy generation, using a mechanism of tradeable RECs (backed by a legislative obligation).

Solar Credits is a mechanism within the RET scheme that provides additional support to people who install small-scale solar PV, wind and hydro electricity systems by multiplying the number of RECs able to be created for eligible installations.

  • Solar Credits are not means tested.
  • Solar Credits apply to the first 1.5 kilowatts (kW) of capacity installed in an eligible premises.
