Connecting green energy systems

PV solar panel and wind generator in a lightbulbRenewable energy systems installed in your home or office are a great way to save money and "go green". Below we explain some of these systems, including the strict guidelines that you will need to follow if you wish to install a grid-connected, renewable energy system.

The Utilities Act 2000 (ACT) sets out the terms upon which we will allow connection of your renewable energy generator (with a capacity of no more than 30 kilowatts (kW)) to our electricity network.

Most of the detailed information in this section applies specifically to solar installations. However, the financial incentives and connection requirements also apply to other renewable energy connections such as wind or hydro-electricity generators. Learn more about wind power.

The over-arching requirement for all grid-connected generators is to protect the electricity network.

We can disconnect you without notice if your generator's connection is deemed likely to cause damage or pose a potential threat to the electricity network, environment or people.

You must use a properly licensed or accredited professional to design, install and maintain your generator.

Renewable energy connection generating installations must comply with all statutory requirements and standards. ActewAGL must approve the installation of the inverter and protection equipment prior to installation. All wiring must meet the requirements of the ACT Planning and Land Authority.

You will need to make provisions for metering equipment suitable for the purpose of the installation. The method of connection will depend on the metering arrangements.

Certain steps of protection are required. Testing must be completed before final approval, which needs to be provided to ActewAGL. You will then be required to install clear and indelible labelling on all relevant parts of the installation.

There are a number of incentive schemes for the installation of renewable energy generators. Learn more about the eligibility requirements for:
