Suitable plants to grow near powerlines

New trees should be planted at a distance from the powerline that is equal to the expected height of the tree.

Below are suggested minimum maintenance drought-tolerant plants that are suitable to grow under powerlines. Listed separately are Australian and exotic plants.

For most plants the spread equals the height, so allow for adequate space for the plant to grow. There are numerous other varieties of the shrubs listed below. For Australian plants please refer to ‘Australian Plants for the Canberra Region’ published by the Society for Growing Australian Plants or ask your local garden centre.

Please note that the examples given below are only provided in the context of ActewAGL infrastructure. You should always check with Territory and Municipal Services for their current listing of declared plant pests before choosing what to plant.
