Keep underground utility infrastructure clear

Never build over or close to pipes and cablesCheck your block before you plan

Before you plan to build anything, from a new house to an extension, pergola, swimming pool, garden, retaining wall or cubby house, check what ActewAGL infrastructure is on and around your block.

Underground infrastructure includes things like gas, water and sewer pipes, and cables.

Dial Before You Dig

It's easy and free to find out what's underground. Ring Dial Before You Dig on 1100 and tell them your block location and they will pass the referral to the relevant utility services, who send the information to you, generally within two working days.

Never build structures, retaining walls or plant trees over electricity cables, sewers, water mains or gas pipesFines and removal

If you build a structure that is too close or interferes with ActewAGL infrastructure, you may have to pay for it to be removed and you could be fined up to $5,000.

Minimum clearances

The law prohibits landowners and occupiers from interfering with utility infrastructure, for example by blocking access or building too close or on top of infrastructure. Utility infrastructure includes pipes, poles, cables, wires, gas mains and connection points. Minimum clearance distance required is generally 1.5 metres. However, this can vary so check the required distances from powerlines, sewers, pipes and gas and water mains by calling ActewAGL on 6248 3555.

Never build swimming pools close to electrical services or water or sewer mains, even if they are in a laneway or outside the fenceSome plants are unsuitable to grow near underground infrastructure because of their extensive root systems and thirsty nature. Learn more about plant suitability and appropriate planting distances from water assets below ground.

It is your responsibility

It is the responsibility of all landowners and occupiers to ensure there are no interferences to utility infrastructure. If you engage a draftsperson, builder, architect or landscaper, the landowner is still held responsible if they fail to comply with minimum clearance or damage ActewAGL's infrastructure. Make sure they include these checks in your project.

Never dig holes without finding out where sewer, water or gas pipes or electricity cables are locatedThink outside your block

When building swimming pools or other structures, always consider services and substations outside your block. Minimum distances and other factors still apply.

Safety

If you hit an underground pipe or cable, it could be expensive and dangerous. Keep yourself and your family safe. Check your block before you plan and do not build too close to poles, pipes or wires. See the minimum clearances mentioned above.
