ACT life support rebate

If the life support equipment you depend on is electrically operated or requires a fresh supply of water then the account holder of your principal place of residence may be entitled to a rebate on the electricity account and/or the water usage charges.

The rebate is calculated on a daily basis. Each rebate will appear on the electricity and/or water bill as a separate line item.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the rebate:

  • the life support equipment must be prescribed by an ACT medical practitioner for the treatment of a life-threatening condition
  • the property relating to the account has to be the sole or principal place of residence of the applicant
  • the applicant must provide ActewAGL with a current letter of authority signed by the applicant's ACT medical practitioner or an authorised officer of the ACT Department of Health, specifying the type of equipment and the amount of time in use.

The following electrically-operated life-support equipment entitles the applicant to an electricity life-support rebate:

  • dialysis machine
  • oxygen concentrator
  • respirator
  • CPAP regulator
  • longstay life support
  • nebuliser
  • LS reference
  • TPN device
  • Crigler Najjar Syndrome Phototherapy Equipment
  • Medical Heating and Cooling
  • other apparatus, subject to approval.

Medical Heating and Cooling Rebate Eligibility

To be eligible for the Medical Heating and Cooling rebate an applicant must:

  • hold a Pensioner Concession Card issued by either Centrelink or the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA); Gold Card issued by the DVA; Health care card issued by Centrelink; AND
  • have a medically diagnosed inability to self-regulate body temperature; AND
  • meet at least one primary and one secondary qualifying medical condition requiring heating or cooling to prevent severe exacerbation of the condition; AND
  • provide certification from their medical practitioner that the medical condition requires heating or cooling to prevent severe exacerbation of their condition or risk of complications; AND
  • the property relating to the account has to be the sole or principal place of residence of the applicant.

Qualifying Medical Conditions for Life Support Rebate – Medical Heating and Cooling Rebate

Primary

  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
  • Motor neurone disease
  • Lymphoedema
  • Post polio Syndrome/Poliomyelitis

AND Secondary

  • Severe immobility resulting in problems with the self regulation of body temperature due to a loss of sympathetic nervous system control.
  • Demonstrated significant loss of autonomic regulation of sweating, heart rate or blood pressure.
  • Demonstrated loss of physiological function or significant aggravation of clinical condition at extremes of environmental temperature.

Home Haemodialysis

To be eligible for the Home Haemodialysis rebate an applicant must provide:

  • evidence that he/she is the registered owner or joint owner of the property or that the person receiving treatment resides permanently with the applicant
  • notification to ActewAGL in the event that the home dialysis treatment stops
  • a letter from a medical practitioner/professional confirming that:
    • the applicant is receiving treatment from a home dialysis machine, or
    • the applicant is the guardian/parent/carer of a person receiving treatment from a home dialysis machine.

To apply, simply print the Life Support Electricity Rebate Application Form, fill it in, sign it and attach the appropriate authorisation, sending it to:

To complete this form you will need:

  • a current letter of authority signed by your ACT medical practitioner or an authorised officer of the ACT Department of Health, specifying the type of equipment and the amount of time it is used. If you require an ongoing Life Support Rebate, please ask your Medical Practitioner to state this in a letter and we’ll record it for you. 
  • your ActewAGL account details for electricity and/or water and sewerage.

Please note

You will need to fill out a new application if you change your address. Applications must be submitted as soon as possible, prior to the issue of the first account on which the rebate is claimed. Retrospective adjustments may be made.

Goods and Services Tax (GST)

GST applies to the balance of your electricity account after the rebate has been deducted. Water and sewerage are GST free.
