Domestic solar water heaters

Solar hot water system and PV solar panels installed on the roof of a houseThe most common system, domestic solar water heaters consist of up to three relatively thick glazed solar panels, each about one metre by two metres in size. Sometimes a roof-mounted water tank is attached and matt black metal may be visible behind the panel glass.

These types of systems are used to provide hot water for kitchens, bathrooms and other household use. When there is not enough sunlight to reach useful temperatures these systems are commonly boosted by electrical or, less commonly, gas heating. Learn more about ActewAGL's solar water systems.

To install one of these systems in the ACT planning permission may be required through the ACT Planning and Land Authority.

Solar pool water heater

A larger area of black plastic pipes with no glazing is a solar pool water heater. These are used for pool heating and heat water to a lower temperature than domestic solar water heaters. Often not boosted by electricity or gas, solar pool water heaters are used to extend the comfortable swimming season.
