Photovoltaic (solar) systems
Photovoltaic (PV) systems (also referred to as solar systems) generate electricity directly from sunlight. Australia has abundant sunlight year round. By using PV cells to capture this unlimited resource we can turn it into solar energy to power equipment like domestic hot water systems or solar pool water heaters — without emitting any
harmful substances into the environment.
Solar cells provide a practical way of reducing our dependence on traditional electricity sources such as coal, oil and gas. These systems are ideal for homeowners as they have no moving parts, noise or pollution and minimal maintenance or cleaning is required.
PV cells are substantially smaller and thinner than other panels and sometimes have shiny blue metal visible under their glazing. These produce electricity from the sunlight striking them. Individual panel sizes vary, but larger installations are likely to involve a number of 50 centimetre by approximately 1.2 metre panels, each producing up to 80 watts of electricity under full sunlight.
If you connect a solar energy system to the grid you have the freedom to use your energy as you please. These systems generate renewable electricity that can be used throughout the home to offset energy bills.
