Fun with static electricity

Experiment - Magic wand

Requires: a plastic ruler, a piece of synthetic material or clothing, a small piece of paper about the size of your fingernail.

Rub the ruler with the material for a few minutes.

Hold it just above the piece of paper and see if it moves.

What else can you attract to your magic wand?

When you made your magic wand pick up the scrap of paper, the "magic" in your ruler was an electric charge or static electricity.

This happens because free electrons were transferred between the ruler and the material.
