Facts about wind energy
The wind energy industry is growing rapidly around the world. It is expected to also grow in Australia. A single modern wind turbine can produce the energy for several hundred homes. This can save up to 3,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.
- Wind turbines can be connected to the electricity grid. They can also be used as stand-alone electricity supplies ideal for farms or isolated communities.
- Wind turbines need strong winds, preferably all year round, to generate electricity economically. They often need to be located on ridges.
- Wind turbines need to be tall. They are usually around 50 to 80 metres high and 80 metres in diameter.
- Wind turbines can be built and installed relatively quickly compared to the time it takes to build hydroelectric, fossil fuel or nuclear power plants.
- Wind turbines are often flexible in dimensions and structure, so that their output of energy can be increased quickly and easily.
- The wind turbines used for energy production can cost up to $3 million each.
- Wind turbines may make a soft whooshing sound as the blades pass the tower. It is possible to hold a normal conversation underneath a wind turbine.
- Wind farms undergo stringent environmental approval processes. These include detailed studies of the possible impact on local wildlife and residents.
