- As at June 2005, the four main subscription television operators -
TransACT

Foxtel ,
Optus TV and
Austar - had 1.7 million subscribers.
- In 2004, 59 per cent of subscribers were in capital cities. Subscription television penetration was highest in Sydney with 35 per cent of households subscribing, and lowest in Perth with 18 per cent.
- Overall, pay television has the highest share of viewing on Wednesday evenings (15 per cent) and the lowest during the day on Saturdays.
- Subscription television accounts for about half of all television viewing time in Australia (despite only being in about 24 per cent of homes). Its share is highest during holiday periods, especially during the Christmas holidays, and reached around 55 per cent in December 2000.
- Across all age groups, more time is spent watching television each day in homes with subscription television (three hours and 33 minutes) than across all homes (three hours and seven minutes).
- In households with subscription television, older people (55+) watch the most television overall (nearly five hours each day in 2004) and more than two hours (47 per cent) of this is subscription television channels.
- Children aged 5 - 12 watch the least television overall (two hours 23 minutes) but a higher proportion of subscription television (67 per cent).
