Want a career with spark?
Applications for ActewAGL Apprenticeships in 2012 have now closed.
Each year ActewAGL encourages women to consider an apprenticeship. Applications usually open in October for apprenticeships starting January or February the following year. ActewAGL apprenticeships are a great career option that offer great benefits including:
above-award pay
- on-the-job training
- a mature-age apprentice wage if you’re over 21
- further study and career path options
- experience across different areas of the electricity network
- nationally accredited qualifications recognised around Australia
- working outdoors in various locations
- all uniforms and equipment provided, a free gym membership and flexible working arrangements.
What does an apprentice do?
As an ActewAGL apprentice you will join a team of around 440 people who maintain the electricity network within the ACT.
ActewAGL apprentices work at various ActewAGL sites and complete a four-year competency-based apprenticeship including a three-year part-time study component, conducted by the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT). Apprenticeships are available for electrical fitters and electrical lineworkers.
Electrical lineworker apprenticeship
During the electrical lineworker apprenticeship you will rotate across roles in different areas of the electricity network, gaining experience in wiring up new suburbs, installing and maintaining poles and hardware as well as getting the power back on when there is a black out, after a storm or system failure.
Electrical fitter apprenticeship
A number of women have successfully completed the electrical fitter apprenticeship. While this is the least physically strenuous of ActewAGL’s apprenticeships, you will still need to get your hands dirty. During the electrical fitter apprenticeship you will rotate across roles in different areas of the electricity network, gaining experience in wiring up new suburbs, installing and maintaining streetlights, transformers and meters as well as getting the power back on when there is a black out after a storm or system failure. You will also be placed with host employers to gain experience and skills in the domestic and commercial construction industry.
What qualifications will I get?
On successful completion of a lineworker apprenticeship you will receive a Certificate III in ESI Distribution – Lineworker.
On successful completion of an electrical fitters apprenticeship you will receive a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician which allows you to apply for a Construction Occupation Licence – Electrician, permitting you to carry out electrical work in the ACT.
