ActewAGL apprenticeships

When you get an electrical apprenticeship with ActewAGL, you get more than a job — you get an education and a career.

ActewAGL electrical apprentices:

  • are recruited by ActewAGL Networks division
  • get to work at various ActewAGL buildings and worksites
  • must complete a three-year CIT part-time course as part of their apprenticeship
  • may receive further opportunities to study engineering after their three-year course.

ActewAGL Networks division recruits for the following four-year competency-based apprenticeships.

Electrical fitters

On successful completion, the apprentice will be issued a Certificate III Electrotechnology Electrician and be eligible for a Construction Occupation License - Electrician.

During the apprenticeship the employee will be trained in metering, motor monitor control, transformer maintenance, and switchboard construction.

Electrical lineworkers

On successful completion, the apprentice will be issued with a Certificate III in ESI Distribution - Lineworker.

Apprentices will undertake work modules in relation to maintenance and construction of the electrical distribution network, which will include both overhead and underground infrastructure.

Cable jointers

On successful completion, the apprentice will be issued a Certificate III Distribution (Powerline) — Cable Jointer.

The apprentices will be trained to undertake cable jointing on both high- and low-voltage cables utilised within the ActewAGL electrical distribution network.

ActewAGL Networks Division is responsible for the planning, development, construction, operation, management and maintenance of the electricity network in the ACT and also the gas networks in ACT and Bungendore.

The Networks division also undertakes the maintenance of Canberra's streetlights on behalf of the ACT Government.

The ACT's electricity network includes zone substations and sub transmission lines, together with high-voltage distribution lines, substations and associated low-voltage lines.

There are approximately 350 employees working at Networks division.

To be eligible you must hold a Year 10 School Certificate and you are required to sit a one-hour pre-selection assessment to assist with determining your ability to cope with the electrical theory components contained in CIT training courses. You can take an online pre-apprenticeship practice test to prepare for the pre-selection assessment.

Applicants are required to submit a current resume and complete an apprentice application pack which will be available in October each year. Successful applicants will start their apprenticeship in January or February the next year.
