ActewAGL teams up with charities to pass on Show treats

Thursday 23 February 2017

A donation of more than 100 tickets to the ActewAGL Royal Canberra Show will be a special treat for recipients of six well-regarded local charities.

ActewAGL Director of Marketing and Corporate Affairs Paul Walshe has presented bundles of tickets to the Cancer Support Group, the Leukaemia Foundation, Menslink, Rednose, Canberra Hospital Foundation and Marymead.

“There’s nothing quite like the excitement of when the Show comes to town and the ActewAGL Royal Canberra Show is an outstanding event,” said Paul.

“As major sponsor of the Show, ActewAGL is able to set aside a block of Show packs, including entry tickets, Showbag vouchers and ride tickets.

“Teaming up with local charities means that some families who aren’t in a position to splurge on the Show will be able to experience all the delights of this year’s spectacle,” said Paul.

As the Show’s Charity Partner, the Cancer Support Group will have a stall in the Parents Room under the Grandstand, offering tea or coffee for $2, tea/coffee and cake for $5, water $2, with all proceeds going to cancer patients and their families in our local community.

“When it comes to all these hard working charities every single dollar that the community can spare really counts,” said Paul.

Cancer Support Group Senior Administrator Lorraine O’Brien said their focus is on pragmatic financial assistance as well as close patient care and support.

“We help 950 patients and it’s growing every day. We do our best to help as many families as we can with the practicalities of dealing with cancer.

“When you’re working with patients every day, you realise that as little as $50 goes such a long way. It can help someone with pain medication, pay for hormone treatment for a month, cover fuel costs to get to treatment, or pay for groceries and supplements so they stay as strong and healthy as possible as they undergo treatment.

“The generosity of our Canberra and Queanbeyan community is huge and donations like the Show packs are a wonderful treat, especially for children with cancer. It gives them a chance to forget for a little while, they can be normal, and it’s such a happy thing to be able to give them a fun break,” said Lorraine.

One event not to be missed at the Show is Noah’s Farm Thoroughbred Pig Racing in ActewAGL Alley. Don’t forget to scoop up your very own ActewAGL plush piglet for a gold coin donation to the Cancer Support Group.
