ActewAGL promotes the benefits of natural gas

Wednesday 18 April 2012

With winter approaching, ActewAGL is encouraging Canberra residents who are considering connecting natural gas to arrange the installation of their gas meter and service, before winter arrives.

Last year Canberra recorded the lowest capital city temperature of -8.0°C and in the cold Canberra climate, where the seasonal average minimum is a mere 1°C, now is certainly the time for residents to think about their heating needs.

ActewAGL Manager Gas Networks Macleay Connelly said, “Natural gas heating provides instant warmth, is efficient and cost effective and there’s a variety of options to suit any home and area – large or small.”

Natural gas is better for the environment as it only produces around one third of the greenhouse gas emissions of traditional coal-based electricity generation. And it’s cheaper than electricity per unit cost*, providing more energy for your money.

“There are some great ACT Government and retailer incentives for people to switch to natural gas for their heating and hot water needs. If residents don’t already have gas connected, it’s more than likely that they have a gas main running past their door,” Mr Connelly said.

The ACT Government, in association with ActewAGL, is offering a Wood Heater Replacement Subsidy, which runs from 1 March to 31 December for people who replace their wood heater with a more efficient mains supplied gas heating system. The subsidy offered is Ducted Gas Heater: $800 or Flued Gas Heater: $600. †

Appliance retailer Rinnai is also offering $150 cash back to residents who switch to the Rinnai INFINITY, Australia’s number one gas continuous flow hot water system by 27 April. †

ActewAGL Distribution owns the gas networks in the ACT, Queanbeyan, Bungendore and Nowra.  These networks comprise a total of 4,717 km of natural gas pipeline and provide services to over 124,000 households.
