ActewAGL warns customers of hoax telephone calls

Friday 30 March 2012

ActewAGL is warning customers to be cautious of hoax telephone calls, following recent reports of companies claiming to be from ActewAGL selling devices that monitor energy usage and apply discounts to bills or asking for overdue bill payments over the phone.

ActewAGL General Manager Retail Ayesha Razzaq said, “ActewAGL does not currently sell devices that monitor energy usage which apply discounts to energy bills and has not engaged any other company to sell this kind of product on its behalf over the phone.

“Also, if you are suspicious of a caller claiming to be from ActewAGL and asking for overdue bill payments by credit card – just hang up and call us on 13 14 93 so we can assist you.”

These scams should be reported to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to ActewAGL on 13 14 93.

Customers concerned about these calls should contact the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission via the SCAMwatch website (www.scamwatch.gov.au) or by calling 1300 795 995.
